What's an SSD?

An SSD is a Solid State Drive. It is similar to a USB or "flash" drive in that it stores data on billions of tiny transistors. It differs from conventional HDDs or Hard Disk Drives which are mechanical, consisting of a motorised spindle which spins platters, and read/write heads which read and write data from and to the platters.

Benefits of an SSD

  • Faster Boot Speed
  • Lower Power Usage
  • Faster App Loading
  • No Moving Parts
  • Longer Warranty

RAM Upgrades

RAM (Random Access Memory) is like the short-term memory for your computer, in the form of a plastic card with memory chips which clips into a slot on your motherboard. Most PC's and laptops have more than one slot, so you can add RAM to increase memory capacity.

Information stored in RAM is usually work being done on your computer in real time, like any open apps you might be using for browsing the web, image editing, watching movies, writing documents, etc.

RAM upgrades are relatively cheap, around $70, provided your computer is less than 4 or 5 years old. Secondhand RAM chips are sometimes available for older computers.
